When disaster strikes and you find yourself in the middle of a roofing emergency, waiting for help to arrive can be frustrating. However, there are steps you can take to help minimize damage and manage the leak until your roofer arrives.
First, deal with the situation inside your house. In most cases, the leak will start to pool in your ceiling as water accumulates, and begin to pour inward once it finds an escape route. This can make the leak look much worse than it is. To minimize damage, place a bucket under the wet spot, and poke a small hole in the ceiling where it appears the most stressed. This will allow the water to drain at once, rather than spread to other areas.
Second, identify where the leak is coming from by patrolling your attic space. Keep in mind that the point of entry in the attic might not always match with where you’re seeing the leak inside.
Third, visit any home improvement store and purchase roofing cement or tape to place over the leak. This will help minimize incoming damage until your roofer arrives.
